The contribution of informal sector to poverty reduction in Mwanza City: The case study of food vendors in Pamba ward

Data for the study were collected from a sample of 90 food vendors’ respondents and 10 city officials. Data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively by the use of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) computer soft. The findings from the study revealed that the informal sector activities specifically the food vending business, has the positive contribution towards poverty reduction since about 80% of the food vendors in the study area agreed that the income earned from that business enabled them to access the social services such as food, clothes, education and health services. The study also revealed that the issues of education, capital, credits, location, have the positive contribution to the sustainability of the food vending business. Like wise, the study revealed that the same factors have a negative effect to the sustainability of the sector if they are lacking, and affects the positive performance of the business.
