The main objectives of this study is to analyse levels and trends of infant-, child- and under-five mortality in urban areas of Nigeria, and to assess the role of household environment factors in urban mortality. Analyses is based on birth-history from 7620 women in the 2003 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS 2003). Results from standard hazard regression (Cox regression) and advanced (multilevel) procedures show the beneficial effects of living in households with piped water and flush toilet. Such mortality differentials were partly explained by demographic factors and maternal education.
