Couples’ level of education and gender differences in disclosure of HIV status in Ibadan, Nigeria

Objective: The paper discusses how couples’ level of education influences gender difference in disclosure of HIV status. Methodology: A household survey of 350 randomly selected married men and women was carried out in purposively selected low socioeconomic areas of Ibadan. Data were analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 11.0 using the chi-square statistical tool. Results: Majority 54.0% female and 62.0% male respondents will not disclose their HIV status to their spouse. Fewer 1.4% female and 29.6% male respondents with no formal education than 72.2% female and 71.9% male respondents with higher education would disclose their HIV status (P<0.05). Majority 72.2% female and 46.0% male with formal education than 1.3% female and 22.1% male with no formal education would disclose their HIV status to family members (P<0.05), especially mothers, to receive care and support. Conclusion: Non-disclosure of HIV status may have implication for prevention of mother-to-child transmission.
