For batter or worse…? Patterns and variations in women’s experience of and attitudes towards spousal violence in marital and dating relationships

Serai D. Rakgoasi, University of the Witwatersrand

This paper will use the latest DHS surveys of Lesotho and Malawi to examine and compare the magnitude, differentials, attitudes and implications of women’s exposure to intimate and spousal violence. Rape and domestic violence are estimated to reduce the healthy years of life of reproductive women by 5 percent (World Bank, 1993 in Nayak et al., 2003). Violence against women has other social and economic impacts that negatively affect women, children, families and communities, and has the potential to heighten susceptibility to HIV infection, through rape and forced sex.
