Contraception and unmet needs in Africa
Nancy Stiegler, University of the Western Cape
Fertility has always been a demographic issue in developing countries and especially in Africa. To understand the fertility level, to implement reproductive health and contraception’s policies and to regulate fertility it is mandatory to have a clear picture of contraception. In order to do so, the research was conducted by analyzing 21 Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The fertility is not only a result of contraception’s use, it is also very important to consider the unmet needs population. The article will show how it is possible to implement a new rate to understand how a female population is protected against unwanted pregnancies, by calculating, not only a rate of contraceptive use but by implementing a new figure : “coverage’s degree”.
